My non teacherly instinct (yes, I know you didn’t ask our advice, but I’m feeling opinionated today, lol) is to say: simply ignore Ms. Waste-of-time. She thinks it’s a waste, you’re not her mum, let her twist in the wind.

But, since I grudgingly admit that this is not the right attitude (and why you are a brilliant teacher and I’m just a person who , thankfully, isn’t one at all), I’d say to ask her this: If the course is such a waste of time why does she want so badly to take it twice? Try the old lesser-of-two-evils approach: do passably well now, never have to do it again.

I’m sure you’ll -as usual – come up with a way to coax her into trying.

An argument could also be made that, in a world with ever more complicated hoops to be jumped through for people to get what they need and are owed in terms of compensation, health care and occasionally litigation, regardless of one’s job one needs to be able to understand language and to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

You want to get screwed by your landlord, your car dealer, your health insurance company, your doctor and/or your employer? Great, then absolutely you can get through life without this class.
