It was really great to see you do your thing!

It is true that I was not surprised to see that mainstream public education is as it was some 4 years ago, it was refreshing to see two important things:

First, students in high schools everywhere, public, private, traditional or alternative, are the same degree of strange. Different flavors, perhaps, but just as likely to make one of my eyebrows raise.

Second, there is an infinite variety of ways in which great learning takes place, and all these weird teenagers we see everyday–every single one of them–are capable of amazing things. The good teachers, including Mrs. Chili, bring that out, and do so beautifully.

There are a lot of differences between my world and yours, Mrs. Chili, but there are a lot of similarities, too. I hope we get to keep talking about that when you come to see my place for yourself.

Life is great when it reads like a first novel! I knew there would be a ray of sunshine when I saw that punk Calvin sitting behind a box.

Thank you. I was fishing for encouragement, and I’m so glad you are all willing to take my pathetic bait!

Actually, Claudia, I’m in the process of putting the resume-cover-letter-recommendation packet together again for submission to a couple of other schools, including the high school in my own town. A big part of me is about THIS job, though, and I recognize that much of that is due to the familiarity I feel for the place and the knowledge that I’ll be well mentored there – I’ve got at least four or five different teachers whom I’m certain I can go to with questions or requests for help or feedback. I just don’t know if other school communities would be that open to the new kid on the block.

CT spoke with one of the panelists today and came back with the information that, of the in-house candidates, mine was the strongest interview. I’m still holding out hope, but it’s certainly tempered with a fair bit of “don’t let that hope get too high.” It’s a coping mechanism, I know, that will help me deal if I’m turned down.

Of course, I’ll keep you all posted. When I hear anything, you’ll all be in the loop.

And thanks again. I love that you’re all out there, checking in on me.

I had one call me the other afternoon ( couple of hours before test time) to tell me that he just wasn’t prepared to take the test at this time. Huh? Not nearly as bad as Henry, but where on earth is this coming from? Can we get a spray to get rid of it?

Hi Mrs. Chili,

Came here from Blue. Love the logo BTW. After teaching HS and Middle school in NYS for 15 years I stopped working in a PAID position to care for my 5 children and my 82 yo father and disabled sister.

My suggestion on how to deal with rabble rousers is to let them go. Tell them that they may speak as long as they adear to your POLICIES. I am sure you have thought of a speaking policy and mission statement of you Gay/Straight Alliance, so make ALL who want to speak adhere to it.

If they don’t – call campus security and have them removed.

You need to set the stage IMMEDIATELY that you mean business. Act professionally.

Use, for lack of a better, example. eeek, George Bush’s tactics on how to deal with people who cause troubele and the leaked memo on it.

Make sure everyone in a office of your organization is prepared for ANYTHING!

This is a LOT of WORK iniatially, but will save you in the long run.

I am encourage to see the Prez is coming to speak at your 1st meeting. AN excellent sign of Admin’s committment.

Good luck!

97 for me, too! The one I wasn’t sure of was the Cubism question, so I went to look it up.

It’s not a good day if you don’t learn something new, and I did.

I’m going on a field trip with a friend today. We’re heading to the Museum of Science in Boston to see this:
I’ll write about it when I get back tonight.

Stay with your chaperone and DON’T TOUCH ANYTHING!

When I went back to my school for my MEd in my mid thirties, I quickly got used to the fact that if I had been very precocious, I could have birthed many of the students around me. I loved being an older student and found my motivation and focus to be much better than it had been when I was younger, I also found that the profs really appreciated having grown-ups in their classes!

Congrats to your friend. I think he will love going back to school.

Oh, the good quotes abound! Click on the link in the post and it will take you to a GREAT site that has a TON of transcripts for the show.

I particularly love anything that comes out of CJ’s mouth – she had some gorgeous lines. I still laugh out loud when Bartlet stumbles into the Oval Office after having taken both a Vicodan AND a Percoset (“you mean I wasn’t supposed to take them both?!”) and Charlie’s defense of CJ in the second half of the 4th season opener.

I just love the whole show.
