20 AprNAAS Distance Learning Accreditation Conference, Help to Shape Accreditation Standards

Another item that was originally posted in one of the NACOL forums.

School Accreditation is one of the key issues facing online schools. Very recently, a number of the regional accrediting bodies have begun to structure separate accreditation standards for distance learning. As Director of Instruction for Insight Schools, I have had the opportunity to work with very closely with NAAS, the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools. NAAS’ leadership have expressed their desire to ensure that their standards are well aligned with the best practices of online learning via a Distance Learning Conference in Las Vegas, NV February 28, 2008.

Please join me in supporting the Northwest Association of Accredited School in their first Distance Learning conference. Dr. Ray Lindley, the Executive Secretary of the International and Transregional Committee of NAAS, who accredits the majority of their online schools, has been very supportive of online learning, but there is definitely still work to be done to make the standards applicable. This work can really only be done by leaders in the industry who know the current issues facing online schools.

The keynote address focusing on Hot Issues facing Online Schools will be given by Keith Oelrich, a pioneer of online learning and CEO/Founder of Insight Schools. Allison Powell of NACOL was kind enough to accept our invitation to address the group and to assist as we work through accreditation standards and difficult policy issues. This will be the first time that NAAS has worked with NACOL to match their standards to the research based work that NACOL has been focused on…this is a great step forward that I’m hoping as NACOL members we can demonstrate our support of with input at the Las Vegas session.

This is an excellent opportunity for us to influence the accrediting agencies to accurately measure and improve the field of online learning. I am really hoping that this will begin a trend toward more specialization in accreditation standards for other accrediting bodies so that online learning can be accurately represented and measured.

Please make arrangements to attend February 28, 2008 in Las Vegas, NV. Click the link below for registration information and location. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I hope to see you there.

In looking through the program , there were two presentations that I found which focused on online learning and K-12 (not necessarily K-12 online learning though).

18 AprThere’s quite an impressive number of linguistics blogs

There’s quite an impressive number of linguistics blogs from very well-known and respected linguists, which is cool. I haven’t done my research but I’d hazard a guess that linguistics is probably best represented in the blogosphere relative to its popularity as a science (yes, it’s a science).
I don’t know if any philosophy blogs exist, or art history blogs. I know of a couple of anthropology blogs, but they tend quite closely to linguistics. Are there any other academic fields with large blogging circles?

I sometimes search technorati for ‘linguistics’ and all I get is a plethora of myspace and livejournal blogs by students complaining about their linguistics homework. Not highly interesting.

As for the random feature, I never try that. You’d sooner with the lottery that find a quality blog randomly.

While I do NOTICE that they’re slacking, it’s affecting me less and less. I haven’t quite hit the level of apathy/resignation about it that my department head seems to possess, but I am secure in the knowlegde that what I’m asking them to do is both relevant and reasonable.

Derek, we’re almost halfway through our term. I teach at what some people call a “junior” or “community” college, and we generally run 12 week terms all year round. My kids are going to LOVE their mid-term exam next week; I can hardly wait.

Yeah, Jangari, it IS an expensive lesson. What I find interesting is that some of them never learn it – most notably Megadeth Dave, who is, I believe, on his THIRD go-round in TCC’s public speaking class…but not in MINE!!! : P

08 AprParents’ Guide for Drug Free Parties

Via the SHEU I’ve been directed to a website which is aimed at the parents of 5th to 8th graders – 10 to 14 year olds.
The site has tips for parents who are hosting the party and where children are going to someone elses party.  It also has a range of party games and food.
Here are the first three rules (out of eighteen) they suggest if your child is the host:
A parent should be present

Young people and alcohol: meanings, practices and contexts.

Good things? I dunno – there aren’t many good things really, nothing really happens. Well – the drink and stuff like that… when people have fights and things like that but – nothing, like there’s no, like, things for kids to do round here and, with the drink, everyone just seems to have a drink on a Friday and that’s it really.

What does ‘not working’ mean?.

A story from Newsround, the news for Radio One, (supporting the programme above) suggests that the government’s message on cannabis isn’t getting through:
The government has spent millions trying to warn young people about the risks of smoking cannabis, but despite high-profile television campaigns, it remains the most commonly used illegal drug in the UK.
Figures show that last year

06 AprISTE 2010 Conference Keynote – Go Vote

I saw an entry entitled Please vote for the ISTE 2010 conference keynote! at Dangerously Irrelevant earlier today and it reminded me of my own ISTE suggestion (see ISTE 2010 Conference Keynote Topic Suggestions ). As you’ll recall, I made a suggestion for a keynote topic and encouraged folks to go and vote for it. At the end of Phase 1, they selected the top five topics and then asked for suggestions on who should present those five topics.

Taking stock in my own suggestion, here is a screen shot of that page:

Click on the image to go to the page for that topic or visit
http://iste2010.uservoice.com/pages/30480-closed-forum-iste-2010-conference-keynote-topic-suggestions
to see all of the topics.

You’ll note that my suggestion finished 12th overall. To get in the top ten I would have needed at least 271 votes, the top five would have been 433 votes and to have been first overall would have taken 1151 votes. In one sense I look at the top two selections and see individuals that have blogs and other social networking tools that have vastly more followers than I have for this blog and my Twitter and Plurk networks – which likely played a role (although I can’t say how big of a role). I do wonder if this is a true reflection of the interest within ISTE for this kind of topic.

About two years ago, although it may have been three, was the first time that ISTE had a track that was focused on K-12 online learning at their annual NECC conference. And while I have never attended, I have seen some interested presentation titles and abstracts for that track during that time. Again, while I have never been to NECC, I’ve been told that it is THE conference to interact with teachers who have an interest in technology in education. So it does beg the question, is online learning really that far off of the radar screens of this constituency of teachers?

BTW, if you want to vote in this phase 2 of the ISTE keynote selection process, visit http://iste2010.uservoice.com/pages/34277-phase-2-instructions
