22 JunWE don’t have to make it up – CHS has a virtual classroom set up

WE don’t have to make it up – CHS has a virtual classroom set up that the DOE has approved as instructional time. It occurred to me this afternoon, though, that my KIDS (my biological ones) DO have to make it up, so I’ll get vacation days that they don’t. That is four different flavors of awesome.

Every school needs a Front Desk Goddess. I swear, our school would fall apart without Miss G at the wheel. Sure, we teachers think we’re important, but NOTHING would get done around here if it wasn’t for Miss G. All hail the Front Desk Goddess!

The ones who need the lesson won’t get it, and the ones who get the lesson don’t need it.

Funny, because I just had a similar conversation with my Trigonometry teacher about an hour ago. He’s giving an extra-credit quiz online, and he told me that the only people who do it are folks who already have a pretty good grade, and the ones who need it won’t even make an attempt.

17 JunWhy Do People Take Virtual School Courses

I agree w/ your reasons for kids attending online courses, if those kids are at the upper end of the high school spectrum.

When we read a kids application essay or their first biography essay we hear things like:–It is closer to home–I don’t have to deal with cliques–Teachers aren’t breathing down my back–I can take as much time as I need for _______ (insert homework, test, quiz, etc…)–Most of the kids at school are like me.–I can’t fit into the traditional high school schedule

I think our kids are pretty aware of their educational needs, but again our kids are from the opposite end of the education spectrum than the ones you work with.

The reasons I listed in my original post were my personal reasons and I live in about as rural of an area as it gets. (central Wyoming)

10 JunThe CBAC’s 4 boundary proposals for Humble ISD

I actually got this off the Humble ISD website. A little shocking, I thought the first time we would see any boundary proposals would be at the upcoming meetings. Sorry I did not have time to look into each of these yet, I’m out of town (in Indianapolis, Indiana) visiting my dad. Also, my little laptop will not let me visit anything pdf, for the moment, gotta work on that. But, here is the information I got for you to look into. Any insight, please clue me in, and I will certainly follow up on this as soon as I can.

Work is underway to develop boundaries for Summer Creek High School (SCHS), which will open in the fall of 2009, and for Middle School #8, which will open in the fall of 2010.
SCHS is located in the Spring Trace area south of the West Lake Houston Pkwy. and is expected to provide relief for Atascocita High School and for Humble High School.

M iddle School #8 is located north of the Sam Houston Parkway and east of the railroad tracks, just west of Summerwood. MS #8 is expected to provide relief for Atascocita Middle School, and possibly for Humble and Sterling Middle Schools.

T he Population and Survey Analysts (PASA), the demographic firm, which has been working with Humble ISD since 2004, provided proposed boundaries and enrollment projections for SCHS and MS #8, which were used by the Citizens Boundary Advisory Committee (CBAC) as a starting point in their deliberations regarding boundaries.

I n the spring of 2008, the CBAC developed 4 other possible options for boundaries for SCHS and MS #8.

T he boundary option developed by PASA and the 4 options developed by the CBAC will be presented to parents and patrons in order to gather input regarding each of the options from those who may impacted by the boundary changes. The meetings will be held at Atascocita High School (Monday, Sept. 8), Humble High School (Thursday, Sept. 11), and Humble Middle School (Monday, Sept. 15). All meetings will begin at 7:00 PM in the auditoriums of the schools.

F ollowing the community input meetings, the CBAC will present its findings and recommendation for boundary changes to the Superintendent, who will, in turn, present his recommendation to the Board of Education. It is the responsibility of the Board of Education to approve boundary changes.

09 JunI find it interesting that a nine year old can tell

Kari
October 10, 2008 at 9:38 am

I find it interesting that a nine year old can tell when a story ends ubruptly but a college student can’t.

Should the students have been writing a paper that’s “deeper” in meaning than a second grade reading level?

As a non-traditional college graduate, I have differing opinions. On one hand, I think the students would like the comments in that it shows them how their writing translates to the reader (maybe use this as a lesson without sharing the fact that your daughter read their work – a “what if” scenario). However, if that were one of my papers, I would feel that my teacher was unprofessional in passing my paper around to others to read.

That’s a tough call, but I don’t think you should let your students know your daughter read their work.

I’m telling you; if I had to take a math test to be an English teacher, the world would be short an instructor right now. My sixth grader is coming home with stuff I don’t remember how to do. Seriously; I jettisoned those brain cells after I passed the (required) classes by the proverbial skin of the teeth.

Bowyer, you hit on my ONLY concern for having the kid again. Toward the end of last term, I heard him complaining to Tad – the other Bozo Twin and Dave’s nearly constant companion – that it didn’t matter what he did, I was going to “screw” him out of a good grade. The fact that I can’t grade what he doesn’t hand in never seemed to occur to the boy.

It will be interesting to me to see what the other English teacher’s experience will be with the kid, and whether or not he passes someone else’s class (though I suspect he won’t. I also heard him boasting that he’s not passed an English class since the seventh grade, so he’s got a record to maintain). This will be his third try at a passing grade in public speaking – he’s already failed out of my class, and Joe’s before me. I’ll keep an eye out and report when I have something to tell you all.

Janeri, never apologize for going off-topic when it’s fun (geeky) interesting stuff you’re talking about. I’m fascinated by the little variations that English presents in different popluations (and generations). For example, we here in New England use the word wicked as an adjective of emphasis; that was wicked coolor I’m wicked tired. As far as I can tell, very few people outside of this geographic region use that word in that way.

My students informed me, last term, that I should stop using the world tapped to mean volunteered or called upon – I was tapped to participate in the curriculum committee this term – because, in their parlance, tapped means sexual intercourse, as in Itapped my boyfriend in the back seat of the car last night.

I watch Nigella Lawson on the Food Network, and I’m starting to pick up little Brittish-isms from her. An amount of indeterminate size, for example, is a wodge (you’ll need a good wodge of butter), and tossing something in without having to be careful about it is bunging (bung in the strawberries at the end, and Bob’s your uncle!).

I love it!
