26 FebAnd here’s one about taking risks with the curriculum

Next week I’ll be here giving a presentation about this blog and the Forum’s website .

I’ll post the presentation once I’ve given it, but this is just to explain why the tumbleweed around here may be a bit thicker than usual at the start of the week.

In the meantime here’s a video from the QCA about initial teacher training:

And here’s one about taking risks with the curriculum which repeats some of the messages from the above video, but adds more depth:Filed under: Uncategorized

Chasing the chemical demons.

Dr John Ramsey, ofSt George’s Medical School in London, writes about legal highs on the BBC website:

While the government consults its advisors on the harms caused by cannabis and ecstasy and then disregards the evidence they produce, UK based websites and high-street “head” shops are exploiting the naivety of young people by marketing to them chemicals never before used as drugs.

22 FebSimple Virtual Schooling Questions

Randolph Decker asks the question, What is online learning? In his entry he points to an FAQ which he has developed that addresses that question (and others apparently, but since the website is down I can’t tell for sure).

Similarly, John Norton asks the question, Are There Limits to Virtual Learning? And then proceeds to give us the views of two individuals who were part of a conference that John’s group (i.e., Teacher Leaders Network) sponsored.

In both of those responses, the individuals accepted the premise that students were wired differently today because of all of the electronic media that they are faced with (and as you know the notion of digital natives is a common topic on this blog – see Students These Days for the most recent entry).

Regardless of where you fall on the digital natives debate, let’s turn the question around a bit. The reason why this gets so much press and the reason why places like Michigan have begun to require that students take an online course to graduate (see Requiring Virtual Schooling? ) is because there is an assumption that we are teaching them in a way tht they will need to/be able to learn in the future or providing them with skills that will be necessary, even essential to their future careers. But Will That “What I’m Gonna Be After Graduation” Job Even Exist When You Graduate? And even if it does exist, will it require the same skills that are required now?

If we are asking ourselves questions about virtual school, trying to predict what will serve our students the best for their future, should this be a good place to start our predictions?

My brother has stopped watching sports shows in the living room because I inevitably wander through and complain about the announcers’ grammar.

Though I do admit to frequently messing up well and good in the “How are you doing?” instance. The fact that most people, myself included, drop the implied “doing” from “I’m well” trips me up. And what about if you drop the “I’m” completely and just give a one word response? It sounds strange to say “well,” and it would probably get me very strange looks if I did it here, in my small midwestern hometown. I think that perhaps this is one area where language is evolving past the rules of grammar. In practical day-to-day usage outside of English departments it seems perfectly acceptable, maybe even more appropriate, to say “good” in response to “How’s it going?”

Why do you WANT one?

Perhaps you’re nuts. Maybe it is to show you can. Why not? I mean, aside from the years of work and piles of money.

Ph.D. is the pinnacle, the ultimate academic achievement, and I want to go for one too. Why? Well, because it predicates a great deal of specific, primary research that it entirely up to YOU. Instant expert, albeit in a narrow field, as a result of courses you want to take, things you want to write about and research that YOU direct. I feel like the next few professional years are clandestine research for what I will eventually want to scrutinize for a Ph,D,.

PLUS at the end of the road there’s a squishy hat and really cool robes.

All over the country, secondary school students are going online for classes. Will the virtual classroom redefine what it means to be a student — or a teacher?

Virtual Schooling in the News.

Again from a bunch of different sources this week. From Edutopia News – the electronic newsletter from The George Lucas Educational Foundation.

All over the country, secondary school students are going online for classes. Will the virtual classroom redefine what it means to be a student — or a teacher?

By Christina Wood

Katarina Williams is an ambitious tenth grader in Haines City, Florida, shouldering the full burden of college-prep coursework: trigonometry, English, Earth-space science, economics, and American government. But trig is the only class that requires her to sit in a traditional classroom. The others she attends via modem, without leaving her house.

Williams, a student at the Florida Virtual School, is part of a new generation of students trading textbooks for text messaging. Nearly 300,000 high schoolers attended online classes in 2002-03, estimates Eduventures, an independent research firm. Most take an online class or two to obtain access to classes not available at their local school, gain a competitive edge when preparing for college, or accommodate a jammed schedule. A few, though, are so convinced of the efficacy of online instruction that they’ve abandoned traditional schools.

Virtual high school to stay put Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (subscription) – Milwaukee, WI, USA

Computers will remain powered up for students in the School District’s virtual high school after the School Board approved a revised five-year contract at a meeting Wednesday. The future of iQ Academies at Wisconsin, the Waukesha-based school that provides online instruction to students around the state, had been in doubt after School Board members raised concerns about a projected deficit at the end of the school year. As it is, the school is expected to post a $604,000 deficit for the year ending in June. But revisions to the district’s contract with KC Distance Learning, the private company that manages the school, mean that the district won’t incur further debt even if iQ doesn’t add enrollment for the next school year, district officials said. Violent video games feed unhealthy ideas to young kids TheNewsTribune.com (subscription) – Tacoma, WA, USA

Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold trained on the violent video game Doom to rehearse for the carnage of Columbine. One week before the worst school massacre in American history, I predicted on NBC’s “Today” that the triple school homicide in Paducah, Ky., would be followed by other such killings and that Doom would be the virtual reality rehearsal simulator of choice. Unfortunately, I was correct. After Columbine, the FBI and the Secret Service found that the teen perpetrators in all the then-recent school killings were immersed in violent entertainment, especially violent video games.

Introducing Internet-based courses and a magnet school for science and math at the high school are two of the ideas Raleigh Buchanan said he hopes to explore with his new colleagues. Others include developing a strategic plan for the system, grappling with the city’s high dropout rate, and introducing a program for gifted high school students that focuses on international issues.

08 FebWordCamp presentation fully next week

WordPosted July 28, 2007 at 5:11 pm | Permalink

I’ll be exploring my WordCamp presentation fully next week, but for those still catching up with things, I started the program by interviewing audience members about their blogs. The successful intent was to get bloggers who blog on similar subjects to meet each other. It was amazing!

There were people who blog on similar and related subjects sitting two chairs away from each other who hadn’t met. There were many connections in that room just a meter or two from each other and didn’t know it.

Markalope was intrigued by this, too, and put together a categorized list of all the attendees at WordCamp 2007, grouped by their blogging subject, if he could find it on their blog.

Go check it out! You might discover who you missed meeting at the meeting.

There are two good points about such a list.

1. Who lives and works near you that blogs about what you blog? Have you checked them out? Check out your competition, near or far, and find out what they are doing and maybe work together. It’s amazing the connections these connections can bring.
2. Does your blog clearly state your blog’s purpose and topics? As he went through the list of attendees, how easy was it to find out what these folks blog about? Check out your blog on the list. Is it miscategorized? How hard did you make it to be categorized? Is it important to you to be easily categorized?

I’ll be expanding on my talk all next week, and I also have a lot of suprises coming up for the two year annivesary of WordPress.com and this blog – so stay tuned!

WARNING: Personal Information: I’m supposed to be on “vacation”, my first in three years, and instead I’m going through WordPress Withdrawl, finding myself hiding outside a Super 8 Motel in my motor home, grabbing some free WIFI bandwidth. Pity me. I still need a vacation but am too fired up from the WordCamp conference to relax.

Lorelle, You deserve a vacation. WordPress will still be here when you get back. Not only do you deserve a vacation because of all your kick ass content you give us, but because your presentation at wordcamp really really kicked some hard core ass. You were truly the life of the party. I don’t think there was a single person at wordcamp that didn’t feel they got a new friend that day after your presentation. And you made time for everyone. The best was when Daniel the blogger from high school would talk to you. His whole face would light up.

Thanks for linking Maraloupe’s list. I’m definitely going to make it next year. I think WordPress is the best category to be in as part of the giant blog that encompasses all. Some, well okay a lot, of the blogs linked there seemed quite taken with themselves IN MY VIEW . . . but maybe that’s how I appear to the world through my blog who knows. I’m gonna try and make sure I don’t. Anyway, thanks for the link hope to get some good reads out of it. Enjoy your vacation.
